Enterprise

At Oban High, we seek to embed Enterprising approaches in all learning and teaching activities – specifically to develop skills and engender confidence in our young people.

Enterprise in Education is about developing skills across learning.

Ø     The five core skills of communication, numeracy, problem solving, information technology and working with others

Ø     Personal and learning skills that enable individuals to become effective lifelong learners.

Ø     Vocational skills that are specific to a particular occupation or sector

Ø     Building close links with local communities and employers.

Skills for Work

The Skills for Work course runs in conjunction with Argyll College, and offers pupils an opportunity to learn vocational skills and gain qualifications which will complement their school based learning.

Pupils have been learning about;

  • Hairdressing

  • Childcare

  • Uniformed and Emergency Services

  • Rural Skills

  • Hospitality

Pupils were working toward Intermediate qualifications in these subjects.

Communication skills, employability skills are all developed by pupils who opt for Skills for Work courses.

What Skills for work has done for me

“Skills for work had helped me to learn more about child development. It helped me to discover more about children’s needs and wants. It helped me to understand how to get a child to listen to you. It gives you a better understanding of how to look after young children.”

“I chose to do the course of sport and recreation because it looked good and it’s what I want to go into. This will give me a head start to get a job!”

Work Experience

At Oban High, we are proud of our close links with the local employment community, which is fostered through close working on a many different projects.

One of the most successful projects which we have is with many employers in the local community who support the work of the school by taking work experience pupils for a week.

All 4th Year pupils are offered the option to take part in some work based experience, which provides them with an invaluable look at how the real world of work operates. Many pupils will choose to go into an area they are considering as a career option, and others who are still unsure, use this as an opportunity to try out different careers and to find out what they may like to do in the future.

We manage pupils’ work experience using an on line system, called WorkIt.   This makes the process of matching pupils and employers smooth.
