SCHOOL/COMMUNITY LINKS
Our pupils were active throughout 2004-2005 raising money for charity. Activities ranged from
sponsored silences, spelling, maths and sports challenges, “Dress As You Please” days and
Competitions. Almost £3800 was raised for the Children’s Hospice Association for Scotland.
Other regular community contributions include senior students helping in primaryschool and pre
school children at nursery school. Some S6 students are assigned to help tutor younger pupils.
Extra-curricular activities are a strong feature of the school. Football, rugby and hockey teams
compete every Saturday throughout the winter and there are cricket and athletic clubs in the
summer as well as frequent inter-class competitions throughout the year. Education visits in
2004/2005 included a ski week in the USA.
NEILSTON AND BARRHEAD NEW COMMUNITY SCHOOL
Eastwood High School is one of the six schools that make up the NewCommunity School in the
Neilston area. The others are Madras Nursery, St Thomas, Uplawmoor and Neilston Primary
Schools and St Luke’ High School.
The New Community School brings a multi-disciplinary, multi-talented team of workers
together to support the good work that is ongoing in schools in the Neilston and Barrhead area
and to work with schools and other agencies to develop new ideas and best practice.
The Neilston staff team brings together a learning support teacher, family learning co-ordinator,
health co-ordinator, community learning worker and social worker all backed up by
administrative support and an integration manager. We also benefit from an additional input
from the careers service. Some of the areas of work the Neilston team are involved in include:
Group work, support to children with special needs, raising awarenss of important health issued
such as drugs, alcohol, healthy eating and active living, health education, adult education,
community work. Work is taking place in each of the six school settings as well as with parents
and in the wider community.
With such diverse teams, there are enormous possibilities for the range of work that can be
developed both in school and in the wider community.
Integrated Community Schools are an initiative by the Scottish Executive aimed at promoting
social inclusion and raising attainment in schools.
A key feature of the Integrated Community School is to ensure that the various services of the
council and beyond are well integrated and work well together in the interests of children,
families and their communities. By working together we can hopefully provide better services.
We are always looking for ways to improve the things that we do. Feedback and/or
suggestions are always welcome. If you think you have something positive to contribute or if
you are interested in finding out more about the new community school, please don’t hesitate to
