Proven approach

SCHOLAR offers a well proven, innovative approach to academic study within schools, Further Education colleges and foundation programmes within universities. Over 400 secondary schools in Scotland are benefitting from using SCHOLAR.

Interactive

The online learning materials have been professionally developed and consist of textual and graphical descriptions, animations and simulations and online formative tests. The material is embedded within a Virtual Learning Environment that provides channels for student and teacher communications, frequently asked questions and progress reporting and monitoring.

Achieving potential

  • A recent survey showed that SCHOLAR had an 80% acceptance rating by teachers and that 95% of students would recommend the programme to a friend.
  • 32% of the online study time is undertaken by students out of school hours.
  • Peak usage time is between 7pm and 9pm Monday to Thursday in direct competition with prime-time television.

PUPIL SUPPORT

The Pupil Support Management Team consists of:

• 5 Principal Teachers Pastoral Support

• 1 Principal Teacher Support for Learning

• 1 Principal Teacher Behaviour Support

The team is responsible for supporting the personal, curricular and vocational

development of pupils, pupils with additional support needs e.g. learning and pupils

with behaviour needs.

By bringing the three support departments together we are able to ensure that an

integrated approach is taken to supporting all pupils in order that they may participate

fully and gain maximum benefit from everything that the school has to offer. To aid this

one Principal Teacher will take full responsibility for a caseload managing all of a

pupil’s educational, behavioural and pastoral needs. He or she will be the single point

of contact for their caseload and will work in close partnership with parents, staff and

external agencies.   All members of the same family will usually be allocated to the same

Principal Teacher Support.

The Pupil Support Team welcome contact with parents and guardians and may be

contacted by phoning the school in order to arrange an appointment at a suitable time

during school hours or at a parents’ evening.

Principal Teachers Support will be allocated a caseload that takes into account the

needs of the individual pupil. For example, a pupil who has particular behaviour issues

would be in the group managed by the Principal Teacher Support (Behaviour).

There are seven Pastoral Care Groups: Arran 1 Miss Highet

Arran 2 Mrs Rorison

Arran 3 Miss Boyle

Cumbrae 1 Mrs Sinclair

Cumbrae 2 Mrs MacGregor

Bute 1 Mr Jamieson

Bute 2 Mr Keogh

SUPPORT FOR LEARNING

Eastwood High aims to provide an education tailored to the needs of each child

which will maximise his/her learning potential.

From first to sixth year, pupils follow courses, which provide a continuity of

learning experiences. A variety of learning situations will be experienced and tasks

set appropriate to the pupils’ needs. Progress of pupils’ with additional learning

needs and particularly those with a record of needs or a co-ordinated support plan

are monitored regularly through reviews and future needs assessments.

Mrs Martin, Principal Teacher of Support for Learning, co-ordinates the support

given to pupils who have additional learning needs. The department is made up of

3 teaching staff and 5 special needs assistants.

The department work closely with our associated primaries in order to gather

information and plan support for pupils who will join us in S1 and who need

additional help with their learning. Information on pupils’ strengths, development

needs as well as preferred learning styles is shared with all teaching staff. During

the first few weeks the support for learning staff shadow the new S1 classes to

assess the level of support required. The support offered may include co-operative

teaching, auxiliary support, individual tutorials, technology or an S6 helper in

class as part of the peer tutor support scheme. In addition home-link school

programmes and a paired reading scheme run throughout the year.

If there is concern regarding a pupils’ learning difficulties they may be referred to

the Educational Psychologist after discussion with parents. Parents are kept fully

In addition, Eastwood High is very fortunate in being able to call on the expertise

of the school Psychologist, the school counsellor and the school social worker.

These staff make up the extended support team.

BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT

Behaviour Support Staff use a variety of strategies to support young people

experiencing difficulties with their behaviour, these may include support in the

classroom, individual work or group work. Pupils may work on anger

management, social skills training, assertiveness training, or relaxation. Contact

with parents is an integral part of the work of Behaviour Support and contact or

comment from parents is always welcomed.

JOINT SUPPORT TEAM

A Joint Support Team meets fortnightly to review the cases of pupils for whom

there are specific concerns related to their behaviour, learning or any other

identified difficulty. The team consists of DHT Mrs MacGlashan, Support for

Learning,Behaviour Support Staff, Psychological Services, Social Worker and the

School Counsellor. Strategies to assist these pupils and provide for their needs are

devised and in consultation with parents, appropriate ways to give support are

organised.
