How to Use the Library

SCHOOL LIBRARY

Miss De’Ath, a chartered librarian, runs the school library. The library contains computers (PCs, for student and staff access), internet access, various CD-ROMs, fiction and non-fiction books, periodicals, audiotapes, videos and games. Miss De’Ath has the appropriate IT skills to teach and use the new Information Technology and has produced work sheets which relate to CD-ROM and Internet usage. There is also an Internet policy in place within the school. Study facilities also exist. The library is part of East Renfrewshire’s Cultural Service Department and so the School can access the vast resources of the local public libraries. The Library is linked to their automated system. This allows our pupils a greater access to information.

The library is open for four lunchtimes per week. During this time different year groups can access the library’s facilities, including researching information, borrowing or returning stock and playing games. They can also use the Careers Library which has a selection of computerised career programmes and prospectuses. Both the librarian, guidance staff and career monitors help with information retrieval. A Careers Officer visits regularly. Student monitors help to run both libraries. Using the library is an important part of every student’s education and throughout the school year departments bring classes or small groups to use the facilities. In addition, every English S1, S2 and S3 class makes regular visits to the library. Pupils engage in exercises in information skills and take part in reading promotion schemes. Many S4, 5 and 6 pupils also visit the library when in English class. To further encourage library usage Miss De’Ath hosts various events, including: visits by various authors, competitions, readathons and various other events. The librarian has an extensive knowledge of the whole school curriculum and keeps abreast with educational developments. Throughout the year displays, competitions and events are run in the library.
