S2

In second year pupils study English and Mathematics as a Standard Grade while still paying due attention to the structure of 5-14.   They elect to focus on two out of three social subjects (Geography, History and Modern Studies), two out of four subjects in the Technology and Aesthetic areas and they may also elect 1 or 2 Modern Languages (French and/or German) with their selection of discrete sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).   A separate booklet is available to parents giving a full description of the curriculum on offer in S2 and this is issued to all parents after Easter in S1 prior to final consultation on choice - available in the "Download Area" of this web site.  During the course of S2, pupils classwork in subjects beyond English and Mathematics also moves from the 5-14 focus to a Standard Grade focus in preparation for S3.

A programme of National Assessment in English and Mathematics operates during second year.

Choice of Subjects from S2 to S3

Towards the end of Second Year, choices have to be made and decisions taken about the course of subjects to be followed in Third and Fourth Years. Choices of subjects are made in accordance with the abilities, aptitudes and interests of pupils. Our booklet “Going into Third Year”, which gives advice and information about courses and career requirements, is issued before the process of consultation begins. Parents are encouraged to consult subject teachers and guidance staff and all parents are offered an interview with guidance staff. The Area Careers Officer is also available for consultation.

The current Option Sheet is available from the "Download Area". It should be noted that this may be altered to accommodate any changes introduced in accordance with national and local authority guidelines.

The school provides the opportunity for pupils to follow a course that is in accordance with national and local authority guidelines for secondary education. All the modes of study are covered and our intention is to preserve as much freedom of choice as possible within the recommended structure.  Adequate time will be allocated to each subject.
