During the period from October to June there are a wide range of staff visits to each of our partner primary schools. These visits provide pupils with an opportunity to meet staff in a number of departments. The Depute Head responsible for S1 also visits the schools along with senior pupils. An induction programme takes place in June and this enables pupils transferring from P7 to S1 to experience life in the Secondary school. The pupils are allocated to their classes and the timetable introduces the pupils to an extensive range of those subjects that they will focus on in their first year.
The S1 curriculum is a common course for all pupils. It provides a broad spectrum of subjects that complement one another and provide the range of skills necessary for future needs. This includes English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Modern Studies, Science, French, German, Computing Studies, Home Economics, Technical Education, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education and Religious Education. Most classes are mixed ability with some setting in Mathematics. There is also co-operative teaching in a number of subjects.
In order to reduce the number of teachers that pupils meet each week, we arrange rotation of the following subjects in blocks of time:
Geography with History (2 periods per week)
Modern Studies with Religious Education (2 periods per week)
