“To succeed in the 21st Century, Scotland needs to foster the creativity and ingenuity of its entire people”

Donald Dewar, Scotland’s First Minister (1999-2000), in his introduction to the national Cultural Strategy.

As a contribution to general education, the art and design department strive to provide an innovative and reflective art and design experience. We believe that creativity, imagination and the arts are central to a dynamic, diverse and inclusive cultural Scotland. We aim to engage our pupils with opportunities that will help them to develop into informed confident and critical aware individuals- to give them experiences that reflect the real world.

In order to prosper in a changing society we need to encourage creativity and ambition. Successful learners need to be open to new ideas and thinking. To be effective contributors to society pupils need to develop an enterprising attitude. Our aim is to support these ideals through involving the pupils in practical art and design skills, the analysis of art and design work and the encouragement of self-expression. We aim to highlight the power of the visual world and engage the pupils in work that will help foster team building and self-respect.

Within the art and design department our desired objectives are to:

*Establish a welcoming, dynamically visual department.

*Motivate the pupils to explore self-expression and reach their maximum
 potential.

*Stimulate an enterprising attitude though art and design practise

*Further the school aim of encouraging self-discipline and a sense of
 responsibility.

*Promote a creative attitude towards learning that allows for individual
 diversity.

Our hope is that our pupils leave us with an insight into the benefits and rewards to be gained from the aesthetic world both as an individual and also as a contributing member of society. (Curriculum for Excellence)
