S3

A wide variety of courses are open to pupils in Third and Fourth Years. All subjects chosen lead to the Scottish Certificate of Education at Standard Grade, Intermediate 1 or Access.

All pupils do an SQA Intermediate 1 Unit on “Making Moral Decisions” in Religious, Moral and Philosophical Education and in S4, they undertake a Work Experience placement and may obtain the SQA Access or Intermediate 1 Unit in “Work Experience”.

Standard Grade is available to pupils of all abilities and there are 3 different levels of course within the Standard Grade – Foundation, General and Credit. Foundation level is the basic level. General level is suitable for pupils in the middle range of ability. Credit level is the most difficult level. Some classes will contain pupils studying the same subject at different levels. These pupils will, however, study a large amount of common material and they may move from one level to another during the session, according to their progression with subjects.   As part of our continuous improvement agenda, some S3 pupils are offered the opportunity to complete their Standard Grade course in English by sitting the external examination in May.  This is done in full consultation with pupil and parents and this then permits an early start to an appropriate more advanced course.  It is currently planned to extend this process to Mathematics next session.

In addition to our Standard Grade provision, we offer Intermediate 1 courses in French, Biology, Chemistry and Physics as an alternative to Foundation/General in these subjects and for a very small number of pupils, we complete the Access 3 courses according to the needs of the individual youngster.
