A programme of mentoring has been introduced this week to support boys in S4 and S5. This is a pilot aimed at improving organisational skills, study planning and promoting a more consistent work rate among our S4 and S5 boys. The boys have either volunteered to be part of the programme or have been identified by staff as potentially benefiting from it.
Members of staff have volunteered to work with small groups of boys (3 or 4) on a regular basis to support them to develop better study planning and study habits. The aim is that these improved habits and clear focus will lead to improved exam results.
The offer of mentoring was made to the boys in October during PSE lessons and they were encouraged to go home and speak to their parents/carers about it. (It would seem that a significant number forgot to do so).
The reason boys were chosen for the pilot is that our conversations with pupils during PSE lessons indicated that boys - as a group - were less focussed, more poorly organised and less well planned than their female peers. If the pilot is successful we will look at ways how we can engage with girls.
