Our School

Dumbarton Academy is a non-denominational, co-educational comprehensive school that sits in the heart of the town of Dumbarton, which is situated on the banks of the river Leven as it joins the Clyde estuary.The Academy has a long and proud history receiving its royal charter over 500 years ago.

The school draws the majority of its pupils from the town's Aitkenbar, Braehead, Dalreoch and Knoxland Primary Schools

The school operates a House system, with every member of the school community belonging to one of the houses below.

Part of our work as a school community has been to establish the Vision and Values for our school. To this end we have worked with the Pupils and Staff and we now have the 'HeaRRt' and 'Mind' of Dumbarton Academy.

Our Vision is that,  together, we will create a school where we;

Make a difference and improve the life chances of all our young people

Instil leadership, confidence and a strong sense of values and commitment in everyone

Nurture a caring ethos where each of us feels safe and happy

Deliver a challenging curriculum and enjoyable learning experience for all.

Our Values are

Honesty - Be honest with yourself and others around you

Equality - Treat everyone fairly and give them a fair chance

Ambition  - Aim to do and achieve the best you can

Responsibility - Take responsibilty for your own actions

Respect - Treat others the way you would like to be treated

Trust - Believe in the reliability of those around us.

The school has also evolved its 'Charter' from the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of the Child and is in the process of becoming a Rights Respecting School. The School Charter consists of 7 UNCRC Articles, selected by the school community (clicking on the image will open up a larger image of the charter).
