1966 - 1968 - Ian Duffy 18/09/2011 15:47:50
My fondest memory was of Mrs Cochrane. She despaired of me. Got on like a 'house on fire' with Mr Gold. I remember Ken Drury, the Callender Bros. (we are now related) and Hannah my ex girlfriend. I have also been in touch with Janis MacNair this past year. I took early retirement 6 years ago after 30 years as an IT Project/Building Society Manager. If anyone remembers my brief sojourn at Duncanrig you can find me on Facebook, or send an Email. Love and peace. Ian. x

hello out there.i arrived at duncanrig from the murray primary school in east kilbride.i cant say i was particularly bright, and that coupled with gawkiness, acne, and an inherent shyness didnt play too well in the "being noticed"stakes.or perhaps it did for different reasons.however what i was fairly good at was art,and it was only in 4th year when i realised i wasnt going to split the atom, find a cure for something deadly,or come to that anything else terribly clever.so when i was asked by mr whiteside in maths class "what i wanted to do with my life" and i said "i want to be a fashion designer"followed by complete silence.these words were to prove immortal alright, and lived with me for the next two school years i can tell you.rescue and understanding came from the wonderfully bohemian and glamerous maggie barclay who taught art and in her own way had a tang of jean brodie with her own "creme de la creme "group in her classroom at lunchtimes.there we all sat, selfconsciously for my part, listening to ravels bolero played scratchily on her dansette record player and opening our sandwiches, mine peanut butter, which my mother had wrapped in milanda greaseproof loaf wrappers.that was topped off with diluting orange which we now know had never seen an orange, but was merely a mix of dyes and chemicals and the blueprint for classroom hyperactivity.i remember mrs barclay,mr baillie and miss mcroberts being very encouraging and understanding and helped me tremendously in realising that you could be a boy and a fashion designer in a sea of would be engineers, academics, and whatever else your parents mapped out for their offspring in 1960s e.k..anyway i eventually got my wish and,and as they say be carefull what you wish for,but i became a fashion designer for 15 mostly happy years.if anyone has a clue who i am,and sometimes i havnt, then get in touch...so to recap. i was 5 feet 10,facial acne covered in an avon spot removing product,(useless)shy, polite, and an embryonic fashion designer.oh,i did a lot more after the fashion thing, but thats for another day.lovely to speak to you,and i realise its 5 minutes out of your life your never gonna get back,

1963 to 1968 - Moira McNeill 21/09/2010 11:45:51
In the 60's I was Moira McNeill. Fellow students that I remeber at that time: Anita Thompson, Anne Smith, Gillian Smith, Irene McMillan, Jean Gillespie, Karen Phipps, Dianna Jackson, Ann Aitken, Louise Belleshaw, Rhonda Fleming, Laura McGill, Kay Middlemiss, Irene Cameron, Adiranne Ferguson,Margaret Withers, Rosalyn Steele, Stuart Waugh, John (Ginger) Lamont,Andy Clelland,Brian Ogilvy, David (fiery) Maguire, Graham Sutherland, Ken Drury, David Bailey,Gordon Harper, Tom (Ian) Lees - to whom I was married in 1970, had some happy and interesting years until 1979 when we decided to divorce. I believe he has re-married, and hope that he is happy.
I have spent most of my life in the Travel Industry, from Airlines, to Tour Operators, Cruise Company, followed by manager of several Travel Agencies. Just over a year ago I bought over the Agency in which I was manager, and have turned it into a Luxury Travel Consultancy. I deal with Tailor Made and Exclusive Round World or Longhaul holidays and Luxury Cruises.
I remarried in 1982, an English man called John Atkinson. John retired last year after 38years in the Civil Service and we now live in North Wales, where I still run my Travel Business.
I was 60 last week, and returned to Galsgow for the first time in nearly 40 years, to meet up with my sister and brother in-law, for a trip down memory lane. It was a very special time, and lovely to come back to Scotland after so many years.
To any of you who may remember me. Hello ! I hope life has treated you well. I have some very fond memories of each and every one of you, and of special teachers who made an impact on my life. i.e. Margaret Barclay (Art) Jenny Auld (English) Gillian Griffiths (History) Marion Hill (Geograpy) James Sutherland (English) Sutherland Schloss (Art) and various others whose names sadly evade me at present. Age is not always kind !!!
I would love to see some comments from any of you, and an update as to what you are all doing with your lives.

Moira (McNeill) Atkinson

1961-1966 - June Fraser 14/09/2010 23:26:14
I stumbled on this web-site by accident and was surprised to see so many remembered names (including an entry from my brother Ross). I think we were very lucky having our education in the 60's although I can honestly say I didnt appreciate it at the time. I still smart at the injustice of being belted on my first day at Duncanrig by a fiendish red-haired science teacher (Miss McKenzie) for the heinious crime of 'having my eyes open during the assembly prayer!'. I also have fond memories of us girls practising for the school dance in the gymnasium wearing stunningly attractive navy blue knickers (Strictly Come Dancing eat your heart out). Jenny Auld, Mr Gold, Mr Harvie, Mr McNab were all favourites teachers who had the dubious pleasure of trying to cram knowledge into my head! My one claim to fame was being made a prefect and discovering that I didnt have to purchase a dinner ticket. I could then have school lunch and stock up on sweets from 'the van'. I can recall buying a single woodbine fag and a match and sharing with other worthies of my group, Sheena McCrae, Lorraine Findlay, Wilma Forbes and the sadly deceased - Jennifer Todd. We are all still great friends and were at Lorraines daughters wedding in Italy in June this year. Its been fun reading all the entries and trying to put faces to names. Happy Days!

E Me! - Gordon Teenan 17/08/2010 21:04:28
Love to hear from FPs 61-67, where is Ross Fraser? Wrote an entry ages ago, was an illegal immigrant in Brasil, repeated the exercise in China (Don't try this at home) as they say. If you ever get the chance to go to China.....Don't...Syria was "interesting" got food poisoning there too. Did meet the president's wife though...very nice!

1963 - 1968 - Billy Robertson 07/03/2010 17:38:09
Hi, Billy Robertson, bewildered ex Heathery Knowe pupil entered the gate of DSSS with my buddy Alasdair Wilson in 1963 We joined 1c and within weeks were settled and had made many new friends, importantly Jimmy Grant and Colin (Colly) Campbell whose shared love of guitar and pop music helped steer me to where I am now, in The Canaries as an entertainer. Early Memories are of Mr Pringle "The Janny" and his more sympathetic assistant Mr Crichton. Of course the more famous teachers of the time, Speedy Sutherland? who would take twenty minutes to go from the staff room to his class, Jenny Auld who was one of the best orators of Shakespere I've ever come across, Bob McDougall the PT teacher who used to treat us like army cadets, McRae the music teacher who gave us h**l for singing falsetto harmonies in his silly sing song (wish I had taken more notice of what he was actually teaching), Mr Wales in the English depatment who could throw chalk sticks over his shoulder and hit chatty pupils with his back turned to them. Worst recollection was being belted by Bubble Kent the technical teacher for something I didn't do and having the veins in my wrist swolen for the rest of the day, made worse by the fact that he kept his strp rillrd up inside a hollowed out book which I think was a bible. Does anyone else remember this? One of the best times was our trip to Konigsee in Germany and if anyone has a digitised copy of the home movie I would Love a copy.

Alison Bushby - alison bushby 06/03/2010 18:22:54
I wonder if any of my old friends will remember me from all those years ago, especially Jill, Margaret, Duncan, and the teachers, Mr Valentine and my English teacher whose name has escaped me now.
What I do remember though and something that has stayed with me all this time, is having to watch the boys lining up hands crossed ready to get the belt, thank goodness as girls we just got lines!!!!!!!
I do remember also occasionally going to the square for chips and a cream bun, very naughty now when you think of it.
I left Scotland after a couple of years to join the WRNS, and am now living in Dorset. Would love to hear from anyone who might remember me.

1959-1962 - Robin McDougal 18/01/2010 10:57:58
I was at Duncanrig from 1959 - 1962. My dad was also there, as PE teacher, from when the School opened in 1957/8 until he retired in 1975/76. Like some of the others listed, I spent time at smoker`s corner and trying to avoid having to do any work. [One thing Ross - there was a Sinclair and a Bill not two Sinclairs]. I met Sinclair McLeod, Jack Johnston and John Harvey and their wives at my Mum and Dad`s Golden Wedding and later, sadly, in 1995 at my dad`s funeral. I left school almost as soon as I reached 15 and joined the RN for a few years. On discharge I`d a number of jobs, [remember full employment?] mostly to do with selling. During this time I met and married another `ex-riggian` Sheila Robb [1960 - 65]. We have three children and four grandchildren and now stay in Forfar. After 10 years involved in the Contract Cleaning Industry I started up on my own in Forfar but after 5 years received an offer I couldn`t refuse and became an employee again. I`m still with the same company but am now the site Health, Safety and Environmental Officer for a multi-national pharmaceutical manufacturer. Sheila and I visit the EK area quite often and keep in touch with other ex pupils - Ronnie & May [Nee McEwan] Cockburn, Tom Jarvie and, Sheila, from more recently has met up with, Margaret Carson and Isobel Smith. 1960-1963 - John Hume 18/01/2010 10:57:58
Hi all you old-timers,I was at the school during the heady days of the early 60s. Who can forget the rise of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and the assassination of President Kennedy to name but two of my abiding memories of the time.I have so many fond memories of the school in those years and so many friends to remember. Unfortunately, I have always had a poor memory for names but I can visualise many faces most of which will have changed considerably now. My best mate was Hugh Nicholson who I`m sure many of you will also remember. He went on to make a name for himself playing in `Marmalade` and wrote their hit `Cousin Norman`. Then went on to get to number 17 in the charts in 1978 with his group `Blue` under contract to Elton John`s record label.I was previously a pupil at Heathery Knowe Primary School when I lived in Curlingmire. Then moved to Parry Terrace whilst at Duncanrig. On leaving the school I entered the Civil Service and had many happy years working in the PAYE Accounts Office in Strathmore House, then to the tax office, Glasgow 2nd district. Ten years then followed in Centre 1 taxes before taking a side-step into ADP in the systems unit at Centre 1. This latter move was responsible for my eventual departure from EK to Telford where I continued to work in the Revenue`s IT office before being privatised and becoming an EDS employee. In 2000 I took early retirment from EDS and now work in a small software house in Telford supporting their payroll and attendance management software. If anyone out there remembers me (for any reason - good or bad) and would like to make contact please e-mail me at ellispeters@aol.com. All the best.

1960-1963 - Bob Napier 18/01/2010 10:57:58
I`ve always thought these FP sites were a bit cheesy. But maybe its an age thing that`s got me on board - reminiscing as the age of incontinence fast approaches!I high-tailed it out of East Kilbride in 1966 and went to London. Stayed in the South for fourteen years and returned to East Kilbride in 1980 (with my wife and two daughters). We have a house in Westwood - overlooking Duncanrig (!) which my daughters also attended. But at the moment I`m living in Bucharest and my wife shuttles between here and there.Have very good memories of Duncanrig - jannies Pringle and Sam for example - slightly clouded by a sadistic Geography teacher (FP`s of my vintage will know who I mean!) I too was a smokers` corner regular - but chucked the fags 30 years ago. In fact, I seem to be getting more health conscious the older I get. (First marathon at 60?)

Hi, everyone. Maybe some of you remember me as "popcorn", I managed to pick up this unfortunate nickname one morning in the first year cloakroom and it just stuck!I`m living in Montreal Canada at the moment, working as a Technical writer for an animation company, if you want you can check it out at www.toonboom.com I`m married and have two boys(men)from my previous marriage. After I left Duncanrig I worked as a Medical Photographer at the Southern General in Glasgow and then in England. Well 12 years of photography was enough so I moved to Canada and picked up various other professions before returning to University. Then I found work in my current field. I still stay in touch with some of the folk from Duncanrig, John Barr, Garry Gillies, Bill Skeane, and Malcolm Mckechnie..but have lost touch with others. Does anyone remember or know of what happened to an american exchange teacher called Mr.Hank Hutton, he taught science and also a Ms. Lentzner.. she was also on exchange from the States? Also Dorothy Stewart, I`d appreciate it if anyone could let me know of their whereabouts.I had many great times at Duncanrig..cheers to you all.

I went to Duncanrig from ´61 to ´67, Mr. Tait was the headmaster, I never realized it at the time but it was a pretty solid education that I have managed to squeeze more out of than I had a right to. I remember those responsible well, Messrs Sinclair, Science, Hawthorn, French, Lind, Maths, Sutherland and Auld, English, McLeod(s) Physics, and Applied maths and McDougal, PE not forgetting Mr. Whiteside who got me on the rails with Algebra, many others played a part, I can remember it like it was yesterday, wish it was tomorrow I would have stayed home! I left school, home and Scotland in that order. Three years or so later I ended up next door to Bournemouth bright lights, sea, sun, and surf. I got paid to travel the world from time to time from then, Europe, the US, Scandinavia, Finland, South Africa, Java and am now in South America ´till March 08. I have sailed around the English Channel and on an 8th century replica trading vessel from the Straits of Java to Benoa on Bali Island. I saw both sides of Check Point Charlie before they went and pulled the Berlin wall down, that was back when all the borders had armed guards, pre Bush and all the terrorists were German. Bader Mienhof and all that. I was amazed to find this web site and surprised it is not stuffed with former pupils. It was just in an idle moment I thought it was worth a try, now look what’s happened! What happened to everybody? Who got famous, who got rich? Who got found out? Who did time? When is Douglas Blackwood going to give me my steel ruler back, did Topham ever straighten up and fly right? Did David Bailey become an international artist? Did Harry Smith become a wealthy arms dealer? Talk to me, tell all, get Skype on your pc and ring me for free! (It’s a free download too).Skype name is cazbil. Things are different here, now I know how Mr. Biggs felt! Snakes, lizards, geckos (live on the ceiling) stop you sleeping with your mouth open., at night after the rain you get snails the size of your fist, all the horses trot, cows have humps and their ears hang down. Occupation: Manufacturing Liason Engineer

I,m rather new to pc`s and happened to stumble on the web site for the old school. I attended Duncanrig in the early 60`s and was in the "B" class and Avondale House (the best!) At the moment I`m living in County Durham with my husband of 33years, but lived for 10years in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My name? Ann Dixon! Often wonder what some of the former classmates are up to --- Lesley Finlayson, Ann Rodhouse, Ian & Sheila Davidson, Pat & Norma Sneddon, Ruby Scullion,Jean Prentiss and many others whose names dwell somewhere in the fog of my brain! Perhaps next time I log on, I might get a few surprises.

I think we moved to EK about 1961. I attended East Milton for a year before transferring to the newly built Canberra Primary School. I lived in Melbourne Avenue, Westwood (Australia), with my sister Jane (also Duncanrig, 1963 - 1969). I attended Strathclyde University for a B.Sc. in Mathematics, followed by a year at Glasgow University and Jordanhill for a Dip.Ed. and a teaching qualification. I turned down a job as Mathematics Master at Kelvingrove Academy (one of my proudest moments) and went doon the water to teach at "the dirty wee port" (Port Glasgow). I married in 1975 and I had 3 fun-packed years teaching at the High School at the height of ROSLA. I joined IBM in Greenock where I worked for 7 years. A year after our first daughter was born in 1984 we moved to Southampton;our second daughter was born in 1986. I have been working ever since for IBM in the software development laboratory in Hursley (just outside Winchester in Hampshire). We now live in Dorset. My area of expertise is quality management. I have travelled around the world as a UK delegate to ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and have the misfortune of being one of the authors of ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems - Requirements.

I still referee football, am a member of the local Gilbert & Sullivan Society and am Praise Group leader at the South Parish Church. Occupation: Modern Languages Teacher

I went to Duncanrig from 1963-1969 after which I went on to Hamilton College (which I hated) and then got married and came to live in Belgium in 1972. I have been here ever since and regret not having kept in touch with folk from school. It was great to read other former pupils` remarks which reminded me of some of the teachers we loved or loathed. Jenny Auld and Mr Shepherd of course were outstanding. I hated French and all the French teachers with the exception of Mr. Swarbruk(?), a real Hercule Poirot lookalike! Who would have ever thought that I would become a bi-lingual? That`s life!! Now I`m a librarian and a pastor`s wife and have two grown-up children. I`d love to get some news of anybody who remembers me!!!!

In my final year I was the Boys School Captain, and in 1970/71 I won the Geography Gold Medal ( Mrs Hill was my teacher). I have been in Australia for 10 years and I am now an Australian citizen - but I do still have my Scotish accent. Prior to my arrival in Auatralia in 1987, I spent 10 years living and working in Africa - Zambia, South Africa and Namibia, I basically left Africa as there were too many wars on the go, and I always ended up in the middle of them.

1965-1971 - Robert Graham 18/01/2010 10:57:58
Dear folks – hope you can help. My name is Robert Graham and I attended Duncanrig between 1965/71. In my final year at school my English Teacher was Gordon McAllan and part of our final year project was to make a film on a subject of the school. In our youthful wisdom we decided to make a film regarding the length of walk between “the huts” and the New Block. This film was produced and scripted by the pupils only, the filming was with said teachers artistic input. We even filmed part of it at the old ferry at Fairlie (largs) - yes the new block was a long walk !.Do you know if the school is still has this film and if so would it be possible to see, copy etc. While I am on can you tell me where Gordon McAllan is teaching at the moment.Would appreciate a reply.

I attended Duncanrig in 1958-1961??) I would very much like to get in touch with some of the old crowd.... I lived in East Mains and also attended Heatheryknowe Primary School before going to Duncanrig. I used to be called Carrot-top!!!!) much to my horror. I came to Canada in 1966. I am married and live in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. I was for a Bookeeper for many many years, and now have my own little business doing Wedding bouquets, floral arrangements etc. and also work part-time in a Wedding Boutique. I would love to get it touch with some of the people I went to school with, and each time I go to Scotland I never seem to run into anyone, probably because a lot have emigrated like myself. I am not very good at remembering names, but I could probably recognize the faces. A few names of the ones I remember are... Jean Gunn, Christine Bishop, Jeanette Louden, Robert Aitkenhead etc. It would be wonderful if Duncanrig could have a re-union of all the old students that used to attend the school!!! Some of the old haunts that I used to go to were: THE OLYMPIA BALLROOM, and the Cafe on Old Coach Road, gosh those were days!!!!!! Hope to hear from someone. All the best.

1958-1962 - Ross Fraser 18/01/2010 10:57:57
I attended Duncanrig in the early 60`s when Norrie Tait was Headmaster. I was never academically gifted or inclined and spent much of my time dodging classes and hanging around "Smoker`s Corner" trying to avoid the Janitor and the odd Teacher who would occasionally mount a "raid" trying to nip our nicotine addiction in the bud. Despite the sterling efforts of teachers like "wee Jennie Auld" (English); the two Sinclair MacLouds (Physics and Chemistry); Mr. Gold (Geography) and Mr. Kent (Metalwork) I passed through the system causing barely a ripple, entirely my own fault. My sister, June, who was in the year below me was a model pupil and has retained links with many of her friends from this time but girls are much better at that sort of thing than boys. On leaving school I worked for John Menzies and spent six month periods in Carlisle, Greenock, Stirling, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow but eventually got bored and decided to have a year in London. I have been here ever since. Over the last thirty odd years I have had stalls in Covent Garden, Bayswater Road and Camden Lock, I have cooked for Her Majesty The Queen at Buckingham Palace and have cooked at major events including Wimbledon and The Ryder Cup. For the last ten years I have been running my own milk delivery business in North London and turned into quite a boring "old fart". However, still got my own hair and teeth and prepared to give anything new a try. I get up to the Isle of Arran once or twice a year where the family home is now. If anyone knows where Derrick Rodway is (I was his Best Man many years ago) ask him to get in touch and we`ll have a day`s Salmon fishing next time I come up to Scotland. Anyone who remembers me and happens to be passing through North London pop into the Springfield Park Tavern on the Bounds Green Road and I`ll buy you a drink and have a natter about old times. I`ll be the grey haired geezer sitting by the bar drinking the Macallan single mat.

1958-1962 - Harry McAlister 18/01/2010 10:57:57
Another `foreigner` to add to the contacts of `58-62. Like those of our vintage who went to Canada etc, we immigrated to seek our fortune overseas - Sydney, Australia to be precise - sorry, Canada was too cold! From the immigration propoganda we received in 1972 (we departed in 1973), Sydney was deemed to have a great climate, fantastic beaches, a great lifestyle (working or not), etc, etc. To our great surprise it was all true! Well, most of it. My current vital statistics are : married to another Scot, from Cardonald (some might say - poor girl!); we have 2 boys (men); NO grand-children and at this time (Feb 2003) and none on the horizon; self-employed but semi-retired (sounds nicer than unemployed!); still got some teeth and hair (don`t care what colour it is, just as long as it stays there). Working for an international airline (Qantas) for over 20 years gave me the opportunity to come back and visit many friends and family still living in EK, and elsewhere in the world (incl Canada). I come back almost every year and always meet up with some old pals in the `Monty`. If you would like to make contact please feel free to send an email to imagedoc@bigpond.com.au, this is my home & business email address. If you are planning a trip to Sydney, drop us a line, and we can try to arrange a meeting. Regards and best wishes to all past, and present, staff and pupils at Duncanrig. Occupation: IT Professional

1958-1965 - Margaret Lochhead 18/01/2010 10:57:57
I left Duncanrig to attend Glasgow Uni and get a degree and husband:) I then went to work in the haematology lab in the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow for 18 months before we moved to England. We will soon have been married for 34 years and have 2 daughters 32&30. We lived in Yateley Surrey for 10 years where I was a stay-at- home Mum. My husband took a job in industry in Ohio for a "couple of years" in 1979 and we have been in the USA ever since. Bob decided to join academia and we moved to Mississippi in 2000. I joined the ranks of full-time employment 1995 and teach developmental math and University Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi. We live an hour from the Gulfcoast and 2 hours from New Orleans. My brother, John, lives in Canada with his family and my sister,Alison, still lives in EK. Joanne Gray, this year`s Proxime Accessit,is my niece...I wish I could be there. I look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers me. Occupation: Academic Specialist /university instructor

It's amazing, but after all these years I'm still in touch with about 15 classmates of 6A class of 64!
FriendsReunited was useful, and, increasingly, facebook.
I'm glad they chose to allow the name of Duncanrig to live on, but a bit sad that they could not have tried harder to preserve the mural.
